There are many situations when you see sun rays coming down through the clouds but the end result is a photo that doesn’t present the situation the way you felt it. The technique I’m using is to capture as many details as possible in the raw file (if possible to have all the details inside the histogram – this means no clipping areas or minimum clipped areas) and then to retouch the photo by using Lightroom and/or Photoshop to recreate the image the way I saw it.
The main idea is “contrast”: accentuating the contrast between dark and light will help you achieve the effect you want. In Lightroom I use the radial filter to create an area of light but then I move to Photoshop and use the brush tool to further increase the contrast.
